Thomas Dunn English
Thomas Dunn English (June 29, 1819 – April 1, 1902) was an American Democratic politician, author, poet, lawyer, and physician. He is best known for his poetry and his involvement in politics during the 19th century.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Thomas Dunn English was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied medicine and graduated with a medical degree in 1839. He later studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1842.
Literary Career[edit | edit source]
English began his literary career as a poet and author. He contributed to various magazines and newspapers, gaining recognition for his works. One of his most famous poems is "Ben Bolt", which was published in 1843. The poem became widely popular and was later set to music.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
In addition to his literary pursuits, English was active in politics. He served as a member of the New Jersey General Assembly from 1863 to 1864. He was later elected to the United States House of Representatives as a Democrat, representing New Jersey's 6th congressional district from 1891 to 1895.
Later Life and Death[edit | edit source]
After his political career, English continued to write and practice law. He died on April 1, 1902, in Newark, New Jersey. He is buried in Fairmount Cemetery in Newark.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Thomas Dunn English is remembered for his contributions to American literature and politics. His poem "Ben Bolt" remains a notable work in the canon of 19th-century American poetry.
