Thomas Shapter (1809 – 1902) was a British physician and author, best known for his work during the cholera outbreak in Exeter in 1832. His detailed account of the epidemic provided valuable insights into the spread and impact of cholera in the 19th century.

Thomas Shapter was born in Gibraltar in 1809. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, where he graduated with an MD in 1831. After completing his education, Shapter moved to Exeter, where he would spend much of his professional life.

Cholera Epidemic of 1832[edit | edit source]

In 1832, Exeter was struck by a severe cholera epidemic. Shapter played a crucial role in managing the outbreak and documenting its progression. His book, The History of the Cholera in Exeter in 1832, published in 1849, is considered a seminal work in the field of epidemiology. The book provides a comprehensive account of the epidemic, including the social and environmental conditions that contributed to the spread of the disease.

Shapter's work extended beyond the cholera epidemic. He was a prominent figure in the medical community in Exeter and contributed to various public health initiatives. He was also involved in the establishment of the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, where he served as a physician for many years.

Thomas Shapter continued to practice medicine and contribute to public health until his death in 1902. His work during the cholera epidemic remains a significant part of his legacy, highlighting the importance of detailed medical documentation and public health measures in controlling infectious diseases.
