Town

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Town is a human settlement that is larger than a village but smaller than a city. The size a settlement must be to be called a "town" varies considerably in different parts of the world, so that, for example, many American "small towns" seem to British people to be no more than villages, while many British "small towns" would qualify as cities in the United States.

History[edit | edit source]

Towns are generally larger than villages and smaller than cities, though the criteria to distinguish between them vary considerably in different parts of the world.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Historically, towns were any settlement with a charter, including market towns or ancient boroughs. The process of incorporation was reformed in 1835 and many more places received borough charters, whilst others were lost.
