Trolling is a method of fishing where one or more fishing lines, baited with lures or bait fish, are drawn through the water. This may be done by pulling the line behind a slow-moving boat, or by sweeping the line from side to side, either manually or with the aid of a device, such as a downrigger. Trolling is used to catch pelagic fish such as salmon, mackerel, and tuna by mimicking the movement of their natural prey.

Techniques[edit | edit source]

Trolling techniques vary largely depending on the target species, water conditions, and the desired action of the bait. Key variables include the speed of the boat, the type of lures used, and the depth at which they are fished. Some common trolling techniques include:

  • Flat Lining: This is the simplest form of trolling, involving dragging a line directly behind the boat. It is effective in shallow waters.
  • Downrigger Trolling: Utilizes a downrigger to lower the fishing line and lure to a specific depth. This technique is beneficial for targeting fish that dwell in deeper waters.
  • Planer Board Trolling: Involves using a planer board, which is towed alongside the boat, to spread the lines outwards and cover more water. This method is particularly useful for targeting species that are spooked by the noise of a boat.

Equipment[edit | edit source]

The equipment used for trolling varies, but some essential items include:

  • Trolling Rods: These are typically longer and more flexible than other types of fishing rods, designed to absorb the shock of a fish striking the lure at boat speed.
  • Reels: High-capacity reels with a smooth drag system are preferred to handle the long distances of line that may be let out.
  • Lures and Baits: The choice of lure or bait depends on the target species. Common options include spoons, plugs, and live or artificial baitfish.

Target Species[edit | edit source]

Trolling is a versatile fishing method that can target a wide range of species. Some of the most commonly sought-after species include:

  • Salmon, known for their migration patterns, are often targeted in both freshwater and marine environments.
  • Tuna, which require specific techniques and heavy gear due to their size and strength.
  • Mackerel and other pelagic species that feed on small baitfish in open water.

Conservation[edit | edit source]

While trolling is a popular and effective fishing method, it is important to practice sustainable fishing practices to ensure the health of fish populations and ecosystems. This includes adhering to regulations, using catch and release practices where appropriate, and using gear that minimizes harm to non-target species.
