Trousseau Gris
Trousseau Gris is a white wine grape variety that originates from the Jura region in eastern France. It is also known by other names such as Grey Riesling in California, and Gris de Salces in Languedoc-Roussillon.
History[edit | edit source]
The origins of Trousseau Gris are not entirely clear, but it is believed to have originated in the Jura region of France. It was widely planted in the 19th and early 20th centuries, but its popularity declined in the latter half of the 20th century due to the rise of other grape varieties. However, in recent years, it has seen a resurgence in popularity, particularly in California.
Viticulture[edit | edit source]
Trousseau Gris is a vitis vinifera grape variety that is known for its ability to adapt to a variety of terroirs. It is a relatively hardy grape that can withstand a range of climatic conditions, making it a versatile choice for winemakers. The grape is typically harvested in late September to early October.
Wine Production[edit | edit source]
Trousseau Gris is used to produce a variety of wines, ranging from light and crisp whites to full-bodied and complex reds. The grape's high acidity and low sugar content make it an ideal choice for producing dry, aromatic wines with a distinct minerality. The wines typically have notes of citrus, pear, and white flowers, with a hint of spice.
Regions[edit | edit source]
While Trousseau Gris originated in France, it is now grown in several other wine-producing regions around the world. In the United States, it is primarily grown in California, particularly in the Russian River Valley. Other regions where Trousseau Gris is grown include Portugal, Australia, and South Africa.
Food Pairing[edit | edit source]
Trousseau Gris wines are versatile and can be paired with a variety of foods. They are particularly well-suited to seafood dishes, such as oysters and scallops, as well as poultry and pork. The wine's high acidity also makes it a good match for rich, creamy sauces.
