Tuberculid

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Tuberculid is a type of cutaneous condition that is associated with tuberculosis. It is characterized by a variety of skin manifestations that occur due to an immune response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis in individuals who have a moderate to high degree of tuberculin sensitivity.

Classification[edit | edit source]

Tuberculids are classified into three main types: Papulonecrotic tuberculid, Lichen scrofulosorum, and Erythema induratum.

Papulonecrotic tuberculid[edit | edit source]

Papulonecrotic tuberculid is a chronic, recurrent, symmetrical eruption of necrotizing skin papules that heal with varioliform scarring. It is often associated with a positive tuberculin skin test.

Lichen scrofulosorum[edit | edit source]

Lichen scrofulosorum is a tuberculid that presents as a lichenoid eruption of minute papules in children and adolescents with tuberculosis. The lesions are usually asymptomatic and are located on the trunk, buttocks, and proximal extremities.

Erythema induratum[edit | edit source]

Erythema induratum, also known as Bazin's disease, is a tuberculid that is associated with subcutaneous nodules and plaques on the lower legs of women. It is often associated with a positive tuberculin skin test.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

The diagnosis of tuberculid is based on the clinical presentation, histopathological findings, and response to antituberculous therapy. The histopathological findings vary depending on the type of tuberculid. A positive tuberculin skin test and evidence of tuberculosis elsewhere in the body can also support the diagnosis.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

The treatment of tuberculid involves the use of antituberculous therapy. This can lead to the resolution of skin lesions and prevent the recurrence of the disease.
