The Twelve Tribes communities are a confederation of twelve self-governing religious communities spread across the globe. They are a part of the Jesus Movement, a wave of religious activity that swept through the United States in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The communities are known for their unique lifestyle, which combines elements of early Christianity, Judaism, and communal living.

The Twelve Tribes communities were founded by Gene Spriggs in Chattanooga, Tennessee in 1972. Spriggs, a former high school guidance counselor, was inspired by his interpretation of the Acts of the Apostles and the life of the early Christian church. The first community, known as the "Light Brigade", began with about 20 members.

Beliefs and Practices[edit | edit source]

Members of the Twelve Tribes communities believe in the teachings of the Bible and strive to live according to its principles. They observe the Sabbath from Friday evening to Saturday evening, and celebrate biblical feasts such as Passover and Pentecost.

The communities are self-sustaining, with members working in various trades and crafts. They operate several businesses, including cafes, farms, and manufacturing companies. They also practice communal living, with all possessions shared among the community.

Controversies[edit | edit source]

The Twelve Tribes communities have faced criticism and legal challenges over their practices, particularly in relation to child labor and education. They have also been accused of being a cult, a claim they strongly deny.
