The United States Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services is the second-highest-ranking official in the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The Deputy Secretary acts as the principal assistant to the Secretary of Health and Human Services and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the department.
Responsibilities[edit | edit source]
The Deputy Secretary assists the Secretary in overseeing the various agencies and programs within HHS, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The Deputy Secretary also plays a key role in policy development, strategic planning, and coordination of health and human services initiatives across the federal government.
Appointment[edit | edit source]
The Deputy Secretary is appointed by the President of the United States and must be confirmed by the United States Senate. The position does not have a fixed term, and the Deputy Secretary serves at the pleasure of the President.

The position of Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services was established to provide leadership and management support to the Secretary. Over the years, the role has evolved to include a broader range of responsibilities, reflecting the growing complexity of the nation's health and human services needs.
