Universal Health Services
Universal Health Services (UHS) is an American Fortune 500 company that provides hospital and healthcare services, based in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. In 2020, its annual revenues were $11.6 billion.
History[edit | edit source]
UHS was founded in 1979 by Alan B. Miller, who is currently the company's Executive Chairman. The company's first hospital, Brooke Glen Behavioral Hospital, was purchased in 1983. UHS currently owns the George Washington University Hospital and Valley Health System.
Operations[edit | edit source]
UHS operates through its subsidiaries acute care hospitals, behavioral health facilities and ambulatory centers. Its UK operations, under the subsidiary Cygnet Health Care, have been criticized for significant failures or safety issues.
Controversies[edit | edit source]
In 2020, UHS was the target of a cyber attack that affected all U.S. sites. In 2012, Buzzfeed reported that UHS directed its hospitals to fill their beds by whatever means necessary and to keep patients until their insurance payments ran out.
