Upstate South Carolina

Upstate South Carolina, also known as the Upcountry, is a region in the western part of the state of South Carolina. It is one of the three main regions of South Carolina, the others being the Midlands and the Lowcountry. The Upstate is known for its scenic beauty, vibrant economy, and rich cultural heritage.

Geography[edit | edit source]

The Upstate is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and is characterized by rolling hills, forests, and numerous lakes and rivers. The region includes ten counties: Anderson, Cherokee, Greenville, Greenwood, Laurens, Oconee, Pickens, Spartanburg, Union, and Abbeville.

The largest city in the Upstate is Greenville, which serves as a cultural and economic hub for the region. Other significant cities include Spartanburg, Anderson, and Greenwood.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The Upstate has a diverse economy with strong sectors in manufacturing, automotive, and technology. Major employers in the region include BMW, Michelin, and General Electric. The region is also home to several higher education institutions, including Clemson University, Furman University, and Wofford College.

The Upstate is rich in cultural and recreational opportunities. The region hosts numerous festivals, theaters, and museums. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy activities such as hiking, fishing, and boating in the many parks and natural areas, including Table Rock State Park and Lake Hartwell.

The Upstate is well-connected by a network of highways, including Interstate 85, Interstate 26, and Interstate 385. The region is also served by the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport.
