Greenville County is a county located in the state of South Carolina, in the United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 525,534, making it the most populous county in the state. The county seat is Greenville. The county was created in 1786.
History[edit | edit source]
Greenville County was established in 1786, following the American Revolutionary War. The area was originally inhabited by the Cherokee people before European settlers arrived. The county was named after Nathanael Greene, a major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 795 square miles (2,060 km²), of which 785 square miles (2,030 km²) is land and 10 square miles (26 km²) (1.3%) is water.

As of the 2020 census, there were 525,534 people, 206,522 households, and 137,000 families residing in the county. The population density was 669 people per square mile (258/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 70.3% White, 18.1% Black or African American, 2.1% Asian, and 9.5% from other races.
Economy[edit | edit source]
Greenville County has a diverse economy with a strong presence in manufacturing, healthcare, and education. Major employers include Michelin, General Electric, and the Greenville Health System.
Education[edit | edit source]
The county is served by the Greenville County School District, which is the largest school district in the state. Higher education institutions in the county include Furman University, Bob Jones University, and Greenville Technical College.
Transportation[edit | edit source]
Greenville County is served by the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP), which provides commercial air service to the region. Major highways include Interstate 85, Interstate 185, and Interstate 385.
Government and politics[edit | edit source]
Greenville County is governed by a council-administrator system. The county council consists of 12 members elected from single-member districts. The county is part of South Carolina's 4th congressional district.
