Vernon Corea (11 September 1927 – 23 September 2002) was a pioneering Sri Lankan broadcaster, journalist, and radio personality. He is best known for his work with Radio Ceylon, the oldest radio station in South Asia, and later with the BBC in London.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Vernon Corea was born in Kurana, Katunayake, in Sri Lanka. He was a member of the prominent Corea Family, which has a long history of public service in Sri Lanka. His father, Reverend Ivan Corea, was a well-known clergyman, and his mother, Ouida Corea, was a teacher.

Radio Ceylon[edit | edit source]

Vernon Corea began his broadcasting career with Radio Ceylon in the 1950s. He quickly became one of the most recognizable voices on the station, hosting popular programs such as "Kiddies Corner" and "Radio Journal." His work helped to shape the golden age of broadcasting in Sri Lanka.

BBC[edit | edit source]

In the 1970s, Vernon Corea moved to the United Kingdom and joined the BBC. He worked for the BBC World Service and later for BBC Radio London, where he became a key figure in promoting Asian music and culture. He was instrumental in launching the BBC's first Asian radio program, "London Sounds Eastern."

Vernon Corea was married to Monica Corea, and they had three children. He was known for his deep commitment to his family and his faith. He was also an advocate for autism awareness, inspired by his son, who was diagnosed with the condition.

Vernon Corea's contributions to broadcasting have left a lasting impact on both Sri Lankan and British media. He is remembered as a trailblazer who broke new ground for Asian broadcasters in the UK. His work has inspired many young broadcasters and journalists in Sri Lanka and beyond.
