Vertical Blue

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Vertical Blue is a free-diving competition held annually at Dean's Blue Hole, the world's deepest known salt water blue hole, located in the Bahamas. The competition, which is recognized by the International Association for the Development of Apnea (AIDA), attracts some of the world's top free-divers.

History[edit | edit source]

Vertical Blue was founded in 2008 by William Trubridge, a world champion free-diver from New Zealand. The competition has since become one of the most prestigious events in the sport of free-diving, with numerous world records being set there.

Competition Format[edit | edit source]

The competition consists of three disciplines: Constant Weight Apnea (CWT), Free Immersion Apnea (FIM), and Constant Weight Apnea without Fins (CNF). Competitors are scored based on their performances in these disciplines, with the highest cumulative score determining the overall winner.

Notable Records[edit | edit source]

Over the years, Vertical Blue has seen several world records. In 2010, Trubridge set a world record in the CNF category by diving to a depth of 101 meters. In 2016, Russian free-diver Alexey Molchanov set a world record in the CWT category by diving to a depth of 129 meters.
