William Bertalan Walsh

William B. Walsh (1920–1996) was an American physician and founder of the SS Hope, the world's first peacetime hospital ship. He was a pioneer in the field of international health and humanitarian aid.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

William B. Walsh was born in 1920. He pursued his medical education at Georgetown University School of Medicine, where he earned his medical degree. Following his graduation, he completed his residency in internal medicine.

During World War II, Walsh served as a medical officer in the United States Navy. His experiences during the war significantly influenced his later humanitarian efforts.

In 1958, Walsh founded Project HOPE, an international health care organization. The name "HOPE" stands for "Health Opportunities for People Everywhere." The organization aimed to provide medical training and health education to developing countries. The SS Hope, a converted United States Navy hospital ship, was the first vessel used by Project HOPE to deliver medical care and training around the world.
