William Christopher (October 20, 1932 – December 31, 2016) was an American actor best known for playing Father Mulcahy on the television series M*A*S*H.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

William Christopher was born in Evanston, Illinois. He attended New Trier High School and later graduated from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut with a degree in drama.

Career[edit | edit source]

Christopher began his acting career in New York City, performing in various Off-Broadway productions. He made his television debut in the early 1960s, appearing in shows such as The Andy Griffith Show, Hogan's Heroes, and Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C..

M*A*S*H[edit | edit source]

In 1972, Christopher was cast as Father Mulcahy in the television series M*A*S*H, a role he played until the series ended in 1983. His portrayal of the kind-hearted and gentle chaplain earned him widespread recognition and acclaim.

Later Career[edit | edit source]

After M*A*S*H, Christopher continued to work in television, appearing in shows such as Murder, She Wrote, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, and Mad About You. He also reprised his role as Father Mulcahy in the short-lived spin-off series AfterMASH.

Christopher was married to Barbara Christopher, and they had two sons. He was known for his charitable work, particularly in support of autism research, inspired by his son Ned, who was diagnosed with the condition.

William Christopher passed away on December 31, 2016, in Pasadena, California, from small-cell carcinoma.
