Wish-Bone

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Wish-Bone is a brand of salad dressing, marinades, dips and pasta salad. The brand was created by Phillip Sollomi in 1945 and named after his signature chicken dish, "Wish-Bone" chicken. The brand is currently owned by Conagra Brands.

History[edit | edit source]

Phillip Sollomi opened a family-style chicken restaurant in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1945, where he served his mother's salad dressing recipe. The dressing was so popular that Sollomi started bottling it for sale, calling it "The Kansas City Wish-Bone". In 1957, Lipton purchased the brand and its recipes. In 2013, Pinnacle Foods acquired Wish-Bone from Unilever. In 2018, Conagra Brands acquired Pinnacle Foods and, with it, the Wish-Bone brand.

Products[edit | edit source]

Wish-Bone offers a variety of dressings, including Italian, Ranch, and Blue Cheese. They also produce marinades, dips, and pasta salad. The brand is known for its signature Italian dressing, which is a blend of vinegar, water, and seasoning mixed with vegetable and/or soybean oil.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

The brand name "Wish-Bone" was inspired by Sollomi's signature chicken dish, which was served with the wishbone left in. The wishbone is a bone found in the chest of birds, and is often associated with the tradition of making a wish while breaking it.
