Yosef Sapir (‎27 January 1902 – 26 February 1972) was an Israeli politician and a prominent figure in the General Zionists movement. He served in various ministerial roles and was a member of the Knesset for several terms.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Yosef Sapir was born in Jaffa, then part of the Ottoman Empire. He was educated at the Herzliya Hebrew Gymnasium in Tel Aviv and later studied law and economics.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Sapir was a member of the General Zionists and played a significant role in the party's activities. He was elected to the Tel Aviv City Council and served as its deputy mayor. In 1949, he was elected to the Knesset in the first Israeli legislative election as a member of the General Zionists.

Ministerial Roles[edit | edit source]

Sapir held several ministerial positions during his political career. He served as the Minister of Health from 1952 to 1955, where he was involved in the development of Israel's healthcare system. He later served as the Minister of Transportation from 1959 to 1965, overseeing the expansion of Israel's transportation infrastructure. In 1965, he became the Minister of Commerce and Industry, a position he held until 1966.

Alignment and Gahal[edit | edit source]

In 1961, the General Zionists merged with the Progressive Party to form the Liberal Party. Sapir was a key figure in this merger. Later, the Liberal Party joined with Herut to form the Gahal alignment, which eventually became part of the Likud party.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Yosef Sapir is remembered for his contributions to the development of Israel's infrastructure and healthcare system. He passed away on 26 February 1972.
