Yuli-Yoel Edelstein (Hebrew: יולי-יואל אדלשטיין

born 5 August 1958) is an Israeli politician who has served in various ministerial roles, including as the Minister of Health and the Speaker of the Knesset. He is a member of the Likud party.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Edelstein was born in Chernivtsi, in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, then part of the Soviet Union. He is the son of a Jewish family. Edelstein attended Herzen University in Saint Petersburg, where he studied languages.

Immigration to Israel[edit | edit source]

In 1987, Edelstein immigrated to Israel after facing persecution in the Soviet Union for his Zionist activities. He settled in Alon Shvut, a settlement in the West Bank.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Edelstein began his political career as a member of the Likud party. He was first elected to the Knesset in 1996. Over the years, he has held several key positions:

Minister of Public Diplomacy and Diaspora Affairs[edit | edit source]

From 2009 to 2013, Edelstein served as the Minister of Public Diplomacy and Diaspora Affairs. In this role, he was responsible for promoting Israel's image abroad and strengthening ties with Jewish communities worldwide.

Speaker of the Knesset[edit | edit source]

Edelstein was elected as the Speaker of the Knesset in 2013, a position he held until 2020. During his tenure, he was known for his efforts to maintain decorum and order in the Knesset.

Minister of Health[edit | edit source]

In 2020, Edelstein was appointed as the Minister of Health under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He played a significant role in managing Israel's response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Edelstein was married to Tatiana Edelstein until her death. He later married Irina Nevzlin. He has two children.
