Zardaverine

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Zardaverine is a phosphodiesterase inhibitor that has been studied for its potential use in the treatment of asthma and COPD. It is a dual inhibitor of PDE3 and PDE4, enzymes that play a crucial role in the regulation of cAMP levels in cells.

Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]

Zardaverine works by inhibiting the activity of PDE3 and PDE4. These enzymes are responsible for breaking down cAMP in cells. By inhibiting their activity, zardaverine increases the levels of cAMP. This leads to a relaxation of smooth muscle in the airways, reducing the symptoms of asthma and COPD.

Clinical Trials[edit | edit source]

Zardaverine has undergone clinical trials to assess its efficacy and safety in the treatment of asthma and COPD. However, the results have been mixed, and further research is needed to determine its potential for clinical use.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Like other PDE inhibitors, zardaverine can cause a range of side effects. These may include nausea, headache, and dizziness. More serious side effects can include cardiac arrhythmia and hypotension.
