Zygapophyseal joints
Zygapophyseal joints (also known as facet joints or zygapophysial joints) are a type of synovial joint that is located between the articular processes of two adjacent vertebrae. These joints are pivotal in providing stability and flexibility to the spine, allowing for a range of movements such as bending and twisting. Each vertebra in the spine has four zygapophyseal joints, two superior and two inferior, which connect it to the vertebrae directly above and below.
Anatomy[edit | edit source]
The zygapophyseal joints are formed where the superior articular process of one vertebra interlocks with the inferior articular process of the vertebra above it. These joints are surrounded by a thin capsule that is filled with synovial fluid, which lubricates the joint to reduce friction and wear. The articular surfaces of the joints are coated with hyaline cartilage, which provides a smooth, gliding surface for movement.

The primary function of the zygapophyseal joints is to support and guide motion in the spine. They play a crucial role in controlling the range of motion, particularly in the lumbar and cervical regions, where flexibility is essential for various activities such as bending, twisting, and looking around. Treatment varies depending on the severity and cause of the problem but may include rest, physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, and in severe cases, surgical intervention.
