21-Acetoxypregnenolone

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

21-Acetoxypregnenolone is a steroid and progestogen that is derived from progesterone. It is a precursor to glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, and progestins.

Chemistry[edit | edit source]

21-Acetoxypregnenolone, also known as pregn-4-ene-3,20-dione, 21-acetate, is a pregnane (C21). It is structurally related to progesterone and is classified as a progestogen due to its ability to bind to and activate the progesterone receptor.

Biosynthesis[edit | edit source]

21-Acetoxypregnenolone is synthesized from progesterone via the action of the enzyme 21-hydroxylase. This reaction is a key step in the biosynthesis of glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, and progestins.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

21-Acetoxypregnenolone has been found to possess progestogenic activity, similar to that of its parent compound, progesterone. It is thought to act as a prodrug for progesterone, being converted into this hormone in the body.
