Alexandre Rocha Santos Padilha (born 14 September 1971) is a Brazilian physician and politician. He is a member of the Workers' Party (PT). Padilha served as the Minister of Health of Brazil from 2011 to 2014 under President Dilma Rousseff. He was also elected as a Member of the Chamber of Deputies representing the state of São Paulo.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Padilha was born in São Paulo, Brazil. He graduated in medicine from the University of São Paulo (USP). He specialized in infectious diseases and completed his residency at the Hospital das Clínicas of the University of São Paulo.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
Padilha began his political career as a member of the Workers' Party. He held various positions within the party and was known for his work in the field of public health.
Minister of Health[edit | edit source]
In 2011, Padilha was appointed as the Minister of Health by President Dilma Rousseff. During his tenure, he focused on expanding access to healthcare services and improving the quality of care in the public health system. One of his notable initiatives was the "Mais Médicos" (More Doctors) program, which aimed to address the shortage of medical professionals in underserved areas of Brazil.
Member of the Chamber of Deputies[edit | edit source]
After serving as Minister of Health, Padilha was elected as a Member of the Chamber of Deputies for the state of São Paulo in 2014. He served in this capacity from 2015 to 2019, where he continued to advocate for healthcare reforms and social policies.

Padilha is married and has children. He continues to be active in politics and public health advocacy.
