Geneviève Alison Jane Moyet (born 18 June 1951) is an English singer, songwriter, and performer. She came to prominence as half of the synth-pop duo Yazoo, but has since mainly worked as a solo artist.

Early life[edit | edit source]

Alison Moyet was born in Billericay, Essex, and grew up in the nearby town of Basildon. She attended Nicholas Comprehensive School in Laindon. Moyet left school at 16 and trained as a piano tuner.

Career[edit | edit source]

Yazoo[edit | edit source]

In 1982, Moyet formed the synth-pop duo Yazoo with former Depeche Mode member Vince Clarke. The band released two albums, Upstairs at Eric's and You and Me Both, which were both commercially successful. Their hits included "Only You" and "Don't Go".

Solo career[edit | edit source]

After Yazoo disbanded in 1983, Moyet embarked on a solo career. Her debut solo album, Alf, was released in 1984 and reached number one on the UK Albums Chart. It included the hit singles "Love Resurrection", "Invisible", and "All Cried Out".

Moyet continued to release successful albums throughout the 1980s and 1990s, including Raindancing (1987), Hoodoo (1991), and Essex (1994). Her music evolved from synth-pop to a more blues-influenced style.

Later career[edit | edit source]

In the 2000s, Moyet released several albums, including Hometime (2002), The Turn (2007), and The Minutes (2013). She has also performed in various stage productions, including the musical Chicago.

Personal life[edit | edit source]

Moyet has been open about her struggles with depression and anxiety. She has two children and lives in Brighton, East Sussex.
