The institution was established to correct regional imbalances in quality tertiary level healthcare in the country and to achieve self-sufficiency in graduate and postgraduate medical education and training.

History

AIIMS Rishikesh was officially inaugurated in 2012 as a part of the efforts to set up AIIMS institutions across India to model the original All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. These institutions were envisaged to demonstrate high standards of medical education and to set benchmarks in medical research and patient care in India.
