Allegheny County is a county located in the southwestern part of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, United States. It is the second most populous county in Pennsylvania, following Philadelphia County. The county seat is Pittsburgh, which is also the largest city within the county.

Allegheny County was created on September 24, 1788, from parts of Westmoreland and Washington counties. It was named after the Allegheny River, which flows through the county. The area was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Iroquois and the Shawnee.

According to the United States Census Bureau, Allegheny County has a total area of 745 square miles (1,930 km²), of which 730 square miles (1,900 km²) is land and 15 square miles (39 km²) (2.0%) is water. The county is characterized by its hilly terrain and is part of the Appalachian Plateau.
