Early Life[edit | edit source]

Alys Robi was born Alice Robitaille in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. From a young age, she showed a keen interest in music and performance. She began her career as a child performer, singing in local venues and on the radio.

Career[edit | edit source]

Robi's career took off in the early 1940s when she started performing in Montreal. She quickly became a sensation, known for her vibrant stage presence and her ability to sing in multiple languages, including French, Spanish, and English. Her repertoire included a mix of jazz, pop, and Latin American music, which was relatively new to Canadian audiences at the time.

In 1944, she signed a contract with RCA Victor, one of the leading record labels of the era. Her recordings, such as "Tico Tico" and "Besame Mucho," became hits and solidified her status as a leading figure in the Canadian music scene.

She spent several years in and out of psychiatric hospitals, which affected her career. However, she made a comeback in the 1950s and continued to perform and record music.

Later Years and Legacy[edit | edit source]

In her later years, Alys Robi remained a beloved figure in Quebec's cultural landscape. She was the subject of the 2004 biographical film Ma vie en cinémascope, which chronicled her life and career.
