Anne Schuchat is an American physician and public health expert who has played a significant role in the field of infectious diseases. She has served in various capacities at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), including as the Principal Deputy Director.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Anne Schuchat was born on October 31, 1960, in Washington, D.C.. She attended Swarthmore College, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy in 1980. She then went on to receive her M.D. from Dartmouth Medical School in 1984.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention[edit | edit source]

Schuchat joined the CDC in 1988 as an Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) officer. Over the years, she has held several key positions within the organization. She was the Director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD) from 2006 to 2015. In this role, she was instrumental in efforts to control vaccine-preventable diseases and respiratory infections.

In 2015, Schuchat was appointed as the Principal Deputy Director of the CDC. She has also served as the Acting Director of the CDC on multiple occasions, including during the transition periods in 2017 and 2018.

Schuchat has been involved in numerous public health initiatives and responses. She played a significant role in the CDC's response to the 2009 flu pandemic, the 2014 Ebola outbreak, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
