António Nunes Ribeiro Sanches (7 March 1699 – 14 October 1783) was a prominent Portuguese physician, philosopher, and polymath. He is best known for his contributions to the field of medicine, his involvement in the Enlightenment movement, and his influence on the development of medical education in Europe.

Ribeiro Sanches was born in Penamacor, Portugal, into a family of New Christians, a term used to describe Jews who had been forcibly converted to Christianity. Despite the challenges faced by his community, Sanches pursued an education in the sciences and humanities. He initially studied at the University of Coimbra, where he developed a strong foundation in classical studies and philosophy.

In pursuit of advanced medical knowledge, Sanches traveled to Salamanca and later to France, where he studied medicine at the University of Montpellier. His education in France exposed him to the latest medical theories and practices, which greatly influenced his later work.

In 1731, Sanches was invited to Russia by Empress Anna of Russia to serve as a court physician.
