Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Antonio Vidal-Puig was born in Valencia, Spain. He pursued his medical degree at the University of Valencia, where he developed an interest in metabolic diseases. After completing his medical training, he moved to the United States to further his studies in endocrinology and metabolism.

Career[edit | edit source]

Vidal-Puig began his research career at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, where he worked on the molecular mechanisms of insulin resistance. His work there laid the foundation for his future research into the role of adipose tissue in metabolic diseases.

In 2000, Vidal-Puig joined the faculty at the University of Cambridge, where he established the Disease Model Core of the Cambridge Metabolic Research Laboratories. His research focuses on the molecular pathways that regulate energy balance and how these pathways are disrupted in obesity and diabetes.

Research contributions[edit | edit source]

Vidal-Puig is best known for his work on the role of brown adipose tissue in energy expenditure and its potential as a therapeutic target for obesity. He has also made significant contributions to understanding the function of adipokines and their impact on insulin sensitivity.

His research has highlighted the importance of mitochondrial function in adipose tissue and its role in metabolic health. Vidal-Puig's work has been instrumental in identifying new targets for the treatment of metabolic diseases.

Awards and honors[edit | edit source]

Throughout his career, Vidal-Puig has received numerous awards for his contributions to medical research. He is a member of several prestigious scientific societies and has been recognized for his work in advancing the understanding of metabolic diseases.
