Aquaporin-7

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Aquaporin-7 (AQP7) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the AQP7 gene. It is a member of the aquaporin family of integral membrane proteins that function as water channels in the body.

Function[edit | edit source]

Aquaporin-7 is a glycerol-transporting protein that plays an essential role in fat metabolism. It is primarily expressed in adipose tissue, where it facilitates the release of glycerol, a by-product of lipolysis, into the bloodstream. This process is crucial for the maintenance of energy homeostasis in the body.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

Alterations in the expression or function of aquaporin-7 have been associated with various medical conditions. For instance, reduced levels of aquaporin-7 have been observed in obesity and type 2 diabetes, suggesting a potential role in the pathogenesis of these disorders. Moreover, studies have shown that aquaporin-7 deficiency can lead to glycerol kinase deficiency, a rare genetic disorder characterized by the accumulation of glycerol in the body.

Research[edit | edit source]

Research on aquaporin-7 is ongoing, with scientists exploring its potential as a therapeutic target for metabolic disorders. For example, strategies aimed at enhancing the function or expression of aquaporin-7 could potentially be used to treat conditions associated with impaired glycerol metabolism.
