BMP8B

BMP8B (Bone Morphogenetic Protein 8B) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the BMP8B gene. BMP8B belongs to the bone morphogenetic protein family, which is part of the transforming growth factor-beta superfamily. The superfamily includes large families of growth and differentiation factors.

Function[edit | edit source]

BMP8B is a potent regulator of energy metabolism and thermogenesis in both humans and rodents. It is expressed in metabolically active tissues, including brown adipose tissue (BAT), white adipose tissue (WAT), and the hypothalamus. BMP8B enhances the function and development of thermogenic adipose tissues and stimulates the central regulation of energy balance.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

BMP8B has been implicated in the development of obesity and diabetes. Studies have shown that BMP8B levels are reduced in the adipose tissue of obese humans and rodents, suggesting that BMP8B may play a role in the development of obesity and related metabolic disorders.
