Bamberg County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 13,311. The county seat is Bamberg. The county was created in 1897 from parts of Barnwell County.

Bamberg County was established in 1897, named after the town of Bamberg, which itself was named after a local family of German descent. The county has a rich history, with its roots deeply embedded in the agricultural development of the region.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 396 square miles (1,030 km²), of which 393 square miles (1,020 km²) is land and 2.7 square miles (7.0 km²) (0.7%) is water.

Demographics[edit | edit source]
As of the 2020 census, there were 13,311 people, 5,000 households, and 3,200 families residing in the county. The population density was 34 people per square mile (13/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 61.2% African American, 36.2% White, 0.3% Native American, 0.4% Asian, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.

The economy of Bamberg County is primarily based on agriculture, manufacturing, and services. The county has a number of small businesses and industries that contribute to its economic stability.

Bamberg County is served by two public school districts: Bamberg School District One and Bamberg School District Two. The county is also home to Denmark Technical College, a two-year community college located in Denmark.
