Barnwell County, South Carolina is a county located in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 20,589. The county seat is Barnwell. The county was created in 1798 from the southwestern portion of the Orangeburg District and named for John Barnwell, a noted figure in the state's history.

Barnwell County has a rich history that dates back to the 18th century. It was originally part of the Orangeburg District before becoming its own entity in 1798. The county played a significant role during the American Civil War, with many of its residents serving in the Confederate States Army.
Geography[edit | edit source]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 557 square miles (1,440 km²), of which 548 square miles (1,420 km²) is land and 9.0 square miles (23 km²) (1.6%) is water. The county is bordered by Aiken County to the north, Bamberg County to the east, Allendale County to the south, and Burke County, Georgia to the west.
Demographics[edit | edit source]
As of the 2020 census, there were 20,589 people, 8,000 households, and 5,500 families residing in the county. The population density was 37 people per square mile (14/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 55.2% White, 41.8% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.4% Asian, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.5% of the population.

The economy of Barnwell County is diverse, with agriculture, manufacturing, and services playing significant roles. The county is known for its production of peanuts, cotton, and soybeans. Additionally, the Savannah River Site, a nuclear reservation, is a major employer in the area.

Barnwell County is served by several public school districts, including Barnwell School District 19, Barnwell School District 29, and Barnwell School District 45. The county is also home to the Barnwell County Career Center, which provides vocational and technical education.
