Beclometasone/formoterol/glycopyrronium bromide

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Beclometasone/formoterol/glycopyrronium bromide is a combination medication used in the management of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It contains three active ingredients: beclometasone dipropionate, formoterol fumarate, and glycopyrronium bromide.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

The name of the medication is derived from the names of its three active ingredients: beclometasone dipropionate, formoterol fumarate, and glycopyrronium bromide.

Active Ingredients[edit | edit source]

Beclometasone Dipropionate[edit | edit source]

Beclometasone dipropionate is a type of medicine known as a corticosteroid. Corticosteroids are hormones that are naturally produced by the adrenal glands, and have many important functions, including control of inflammatory responses.

Formoterol Fumarate[edit | edit source]

Formoterol fumarate is a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist (LABA) that works by relaxing and opening the airways to the lungs, which makes breathing easier.

Glycopyrronium Bromide[edit | edit source]

Glycopyrronium bromide is a type of medicine known as an anticholinergic. It works by blocking the action of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine in the lungs. This helps to relax and widen the airways, making it easier to breathe.

Uses[edit | edit source]

This combination medication is used to prevent and control symptoms (such as wheezing and shortness of breath) caused by asthma or ongoing lung disease (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease-COPD, which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema). Controlling symptoms of breathing problems can decrease time lost from work or school.
