Blood in semen
Blood in semen, also known as Hematospermia, is a medical condition characterized by the presence of blood in the semen. This condition can be alarming to many individuals, but it is typically benign and often resolves on its own. However, in some cases, it may be indicative of an underlying medical condition that requires treatment.
Causes[edit | edit source]
Blood in semen can be caused by several factors. These include:
- Prostate biopsy: This is a common cause of blood in semen. The blood can remain in the semen for several weeks after the procedure.
- Inflammation or infection: Inflammation or infection in the prostate, urethra, epididymis, or seminal vesicles can cause blood in semen.
- Trauma: Any trauma to the sex organs, including surgery or a direct blow, can cause blood in semen.
- Cancer: In rare cases, blood in semen can be a sign of prostate, testicular, or urethral cancer.
Symptoms[edit | edit source]
The primary symptom of blood in semen is the presence of red or brown semen. Other symptoms may include:
- Pain during ejaculation
- Painful urination
- Lower back pain
- Fever or chills
- Swelling in the testicles or groin area
Diagnosis[edit | edit source]
Diagnosis of blood in semen typically involves a thorough medical history and physical examination. Additional tests may include:
- Urinalysis: This can help identify any infection or blood in the urine.
- Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test: This blood test can help detect prostate problems, including cancer.
- Imaging tests: Ultrasound or MRI can provide images of the prostate and other structures in the pelvis.
Treatment[edit | edit source]
Treatment for blood in semen depends on the underlying cause. If an infection is present, antibiotics may be prescribed. If the cause is a prostate biopsy, no treatment is typically necessary as the blood in semen should resolve on its own. In cases where cancer is the cause, treatment options may include surgery, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy.
