Boris Lushniak
Boris Lushniak is an American physician and public health official who served as the Acting Surgeon General of the United States from July 17, 2013, to December 15, 2014. He succeeded Regina Benjamin and was succeeded by Vivek Murthy. Lushniak is known for his extensive work in public health, particularly in the areas of dermatology and occupational health.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Lushniak was born in Chicago, Illinois. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Loyola University Chicago and his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He also holds a Master of Public Health degree from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Lushniak began his career in public health as a medical officer in the United States Public Health Service (USPHS). He has held various positions within the USPHS, including serving as the Chief Medical Officer of the Office of Counterterrorism and Emerging Threats at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Surgeon General of the United States[edit | edit source]
Lushniak was appointed as the Deputy Surgeon General in 2010. He became the Acting Surgeon General in 2013, following the resignation of Regina Benjamin. During his tenure, he focused on several key public health issues, including skin cancer prevention, tobacco control, and emergency preparedness.
