Breast diseases

From WikiMD's Wellnesspedia

Breast diseases encompass a variety of conditions that affect the breast tissue. These diseases can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous), and they can affect both men and women, although they are more common in women.

Types of Breast Diseases[edit | edit source]

There are several types of breast diseases, including:

  • Breast cancer: This is the most well-known type of breast disease. It occurs when cells in the breast begin to grow uncontrollably, forming a tumor that can often be seen on a mammogram or felt as a lump.
  • Fibrocystic breast disease: This condition is characterized by lumpiness and usually discomfort in one or both breasts. The lumpiness is due to small breast masses or cysts. The condition is very common and is not associated with a higher risk of breast cancer.
  • Mastitis: This is an infection of the breast tissue that results in breast pain, swelling, warmth and redness. It can also cause flu-like symptoms such as fever and chills.
  • Intraductal papilloma: These are small, benign tumors that form in the milk ducts of the breast. They are most common in women aged 35-55.
  • Breast cysts: These are fluid-filled sacs within the breast, which are usually not cancerous. They can feel like a large marble in the breast.

Diagnosis and Treatment[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of breast diseases often involves a combination of physical examination, mammography, ultrasound, and biopsy. Treatment varies depending on the specific disease and may include medication, surgery, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy.
