Cemil Çiçek (born 15 November 1946) is a Turkish politician who has held various high-profile government positions. He served as the 26th Speaker of the Grand National Assembly from 2011 to 2015. He has also been the Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey, Minister of Justice, Minister of State, and Minister of Energy and Natural Resources.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Cemil Çiçek was born on 15 November 1946 in Yozgat, Turkey. He completed his primary and secondary education in Yozgat. Çiçek graduated from the Ankara University Faculty of Law.

Political career[edit | edit source]

Çiçek began his political career as a member of the Motherland Party. He later joined the Justice and Development Party (AKP).

Minister of Energy and Natural Resources[edit | edit source]

Çiçek served as the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources from 25 June 1997 to 11 January 1999 under Prime Minister Mesut Yılmaz.

Minister of State[edit | edit source]

He was appointed as the Minister of State on 28 May 1999, a position he held until 18 November 2002.

Minister of Justice[edit | edit source]

Çiçek served as the Minister of Justice from 18 November 2002 to 8 May 2007 under Prime Minister Abdullah Gül.

Deputy Prime Minister[edit | edit source]

He was appointed as the Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey on 29 August 2007, serving until 6 July 2011 under Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Speaker of the Grand National Assembly[edit | edit source]

Çiçek was elected as the 26th Speaker of the Grand National Assembly on 4 July 2011, a position he held until 22 June 2015.

Personal life[edit | edit source]

Cemil Çiçek is married and has three children. He is known for his conservative views and has been a prominent figure in Turkish politics for several decades.
