Chitina

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Chitina is a census-designated place (CDP) located in the Valdez-Cordova Census Area, in the state of Alaska, United States. The name "Chitina" is derived from the Ahtna Athabascan word "Tsedi Na," meaning "Copper River."

History[edit | edit source]

Chitina was originally a Native American village, inhabited by the Ahtna people. The area became more widely known in the early 20th century due to the discovery of copper deposits in the nearby Wrangell Mountains. The Copper River and Northwestern Railway was constructed to transport copper ore from the Kennecott Mines to the port of Cordova. Chitina served as a crucial supply and transportation hub during this period.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Chitina is located at the confluence of the Chitina River and the Copper River. The area is characterized by its rugged terrain, with the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve to the east. The climate is classified as subarctic, with long, cold winters and short, mild summers.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of the most recent United States Census, Chitina has a small population, primarily composed of Alaska Natives and descendants of the original settlers. The local economy is largely based on tourism, fishing, and subsistence hunting.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The economy of Chitina has historically been tied to the mining industry, but today it is more diversified. Tourism plays a significant role, with visitors attracted to the area's natural beauty and historical significance. Fishing and subsistence hunting are also important economic activities for the residents.

Chitina is accessible via the Edgerton Highway, which connects to the Richardson Highway.
