Chromium picolinate is a chemical compound that is used as a dietary supplement. It is a source of the trace mineral chromium that is essential for human nutrition.

Chromium picolinate is a bright-red compound that is formed by the reaction of chromium (III) with picolinic acid. The chemical formula of chromium picolinate is Cr(C6H4NO2)3. The chromium atom in this compound is in its +3 oxidation state.

Chromium picolinate is primarily used as a dietary supplement. It is believed to enhance the action of insulin, a hormone critical to the metabolism and storage of carbohydrate, fat, and protein in the body. It is also used in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Safety and Side Effects[edit | edit source]

While chromium picolinate is generally considered safe for most people when taken by mouth in amounts up to 1000 mcg daily for up to 6 months, it can cause side effects such as skin irritation, headaches, dizziness, nausea, mood changes, and impaired thinking, judgment, and coordination.

Research[edit | edit source]

Research on the benefits of chromium picolinate is mixed. Some studies suggest that it may help with weight loss and improve blood sugar control, but other studies have found no benefit.
