Colpotomy
Specialty{{#statements:P1995}}

Colpotomy, also known as culdotomy or vaginal fornix incision, is a surgical procedure involving an incision into the vagina to access the pelvic cavity. It is commonly performed during gynecological surgeries, such as a hysterectomy or for the evaluation of pelvic inflammatory disease. This procedure allows for the removal of ovaries, fallopian tubes, or the uterus, and is also utilized in the management of ectopic pregnancy and other pelvic pathologies.

Indications[edit | edit source]

Colpotomy is indicated in various medical conditions and surgical procedures including:

  • Hysterectomy (removal of the uterus)
  • Salpingo-oophorectomy (removal of the ovaries and fallopian tubes)
  • Management of ectopic pregnancies
  • Access to the pelvic cavity for diagnostic purposes
  • Drainage of abscesses in the pelvic area

Procedure[edit | edit source]

During a colpotomy, the patient is typically placed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision in the posterior fornix of the vagina, which is the area behind the cervix. This incision provides access to the pelvic cavity, allowing the surgeon to perform necessary interventions without making abdominal incisions.

Risks and Complications[edit | edit source]

Like any surgical procedure, colpotomy carries risks such as:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Damage to surrounding organs such as the bladder, intestines, or ureters
  • Postoperative pain
  • Adhesions (scar tissue formation)

Recovery[edit | edit source]

Recovery from a colpotomy depends on the underlying reason for the surgery and the patient's overall health. Typically, patients can expect a recovery period similar to other minor gynecological surgeries. Pain management and avoiding strenuous activities are important during the recovery phase.
