Core (anatomy)

The core in anatomy refers to the central part of the human body, primarily the torso. It is a complex series of muscles, extending far beyond your abs, including everything besides your arms and legs. It is incorporated in almost every movement of the human body.

Anatomy of the Core[edit | edit source]

The core is made up of several groups of muscles:

  • Rectus abdominis: Located along the front of the abdomen, this is the most well-known abdominal muscle and is often referred to as the six-pack due to its appearance in fit and thin individuals.
  • Erector spinae: This group of three muscles runs along your neck to your lower back.
  • Multifidus: Located under the erector spinae along the vertebral column, these muscles extend and rotate the spine.
  • External obliques: Located on the side and front of the abdomen.
  • Internal obliques: Located under the external obliques, they run in the opposite direction.
  • Transverse abdominis: Located under the obliques, it is the deepest of the abdominal muscles and wraps around your spine for protection and stability.
  • Hip flexors: Located in front of the pelvis and upper thigh, the muscles that make up the hip flexors include the psoas major, illiacus, rectus femoris, pectineus, and sartorius.
  • Gluteus muscles: The muscles of the buttocks, including the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and gluteus minimus.

Functions of the Core[edit | edit source]

The core muscles have several key functions:

  • Stabilization of the spine: The core muscles align the spine, ribs, and pelvis of a person to resist a specific force, whether static or dynamic.
  • Breathing: The diaphragm is the main muscle of breathing in the human. It separates the chest and abdominal cavities and is the most efficient muscle that aids in breathing.
  • Protection of internal organs: The muscles of the core, along with the bones of the torso, protect the internal organs of the body.

Core Training[edit | edit source]

Core training is a specific type of exercise program that focuses on strengthening the muscles of the core. It typically involves a variety of exercises, such as Pilates, yoga, and strength training exercises.
