The event is organized by the sport's governing body, the International Cricket Council (ICC), every four years, with preliminary qualification rounds leading up to a finals tournament. The tournament is one of the world's most viewed sporting events and is considered the "flagship event of the international cricket calendar" by the ICC.

History[edit | edit source]

The first Cricket World Cup was held in England in 1975. The idea of a World Cup was proposed by the then ICC President, Colin Cowdrey. The tournament featured eight teams: Australia, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, West Indies, and the two associate nations, Sri Lanka and East Africa.

The format of the Cricket World Cup has evolved over the years. Initially, it was a round-robin format, but it has since included group stages, super sixes, and knockout stages. The current format involves a round-robin group stage followed by semi-finals and a final.
