Cysteine is a semi-essential amino acid that is characterized by its unique thiol side chain, which plays a critical role in the biological function of proteins. It is semi-essential because it can be synthesized in the human body under normal physiological conditions, but certain populations, such as infants and the elderly, may require it from dietary sources to meet their metabolic needs.
