Daniel Thomas Barry

Daniel Thomas Barry (born December 30, 1953) is an American engineer, scientist, and a retired NASA astronaut. He is also a physician and a veteran of three Space Shuttle missions. Barry has logged over 734 hours in space, including 4 spacewalks totaling 25 hours and 53 minutes.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Barry was born in Norwalk, Connecticut. He graduated from Bolton High School in 1971. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University in 1975, a Master of Engineering degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Princeton University in 1977, and a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Miami in 1982. He also earned a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering/Computer Science from Princeton University in 1986.

NASA Career[edit | edit source]

Barry was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in March 1992 and reported to the Johnson Space Center in August 1992. He completed a year of training and evaluation and became an astronaut in July 1993. Barry flew on three Space Shuttle missions: STS-72, STS-96, and STS-105.

STS-72[edit | edit source]

STS-72 was a mission to retrieve the Japanese Space Flyer Unit (SFU) and to deploy and retrieve the Office of Aeronautics and Space Technology-Flyer (OAST-Flyer). The mission launched on January 11, 1996, and landed on January 20, 1996. Barry performed two spacewalks during this mission.

STS-96[edit | edit source]

STS-96 was a mission to the International Space Station (ISS) to deliver logistics and supplies. The mission launched on May 27, 1999, and landed on June 6, 1999. Barry performed one spacewalk during this mission.

STS-105[edit | edit source]

STS-105 was a mission to the ISS to deliver the Expedition 3 crew and return the Expedition 2 crew. The mission launched on August 10, 2001, and landed on August 22, 2001. Barry performed one spacewalk during this mission.

Post-NASA Career[edit | edit source]

After retiring from NASA, Barry has been involved in various scientific and educational activities. He has appeared on the television show Survivor and has worked on robotics and artificial intelligence projects.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Barry is married to Susan Barry, and they have two children. He enjoys running, swimming, and playing the piano.

Awards and Honors[edit | edit source]

Barry has received numerous awards, including the NASA Exceptional Service Medal and the NASA Space Flight Medal.
