David J. Jenkins
David J. Jenkins is a British-born Canadian biochemist, nutrition scientist, and University of Toronto faculty member. He is best known for developing the concept of the glycemic index, a method of ranking carbohydrates based on their immediate effect on blood sugar levels.
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
Jenkins was born in the United Kingdom. He completed his undergraduate studies in biochemistry at the University of Oxford, and later earned his PhD in nutritional sciences from the same institution.
Career[edit | edit source]
In 1978, Jenkins joined the faculty of the University of Toronto as a professor in the Department of Nutritional Sciences. His research focuses on the impact of diet on cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and other chronic diseases.
Glycemic index[edit | edit source]
Jenkins is perhaps best known for his work on the glycemic index, a system for ranking foods based on their immediate impact on blood sugar levels. This concept has had a significant impact on the field of nutrition and has influenced dietary guidelines around the world.
Awards and recognition[edit | edit source]
Jenkins has received numerous awards for his work, including the Canada Gairdner International Award for his contributions to medical science. He is also a member of the Order of Canada, one of the country's highest civilian honours.
