David Theile
David Egmont Theile (born 17 January 1938) is a former Australian swimmer who won two consecutive Olympic gold medals in the 100-metre backstroke at the 1956 and 1960 Summer Olympics. He is considered one of the greatest backstrokers in the history of the sport.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
David Theile was born in Maryborough, Queensland, Australia. He attended Brisbane Grammar School where he began to develop his swimming skills. Theile later studied at the University of Queensland, where he pursued a degree in medicine.
Swimming Career[edit | edit source]
Theile's swimming career took off when he won his first national title in the 100-metre backstroke in 1955. He went on to dominate the event in Australia for several years.
1956 Summer Olympics[edit | edit source]
At the 1956 Summer Olympics held in Melbourne, Theile won the gold medal in the 100-metre backstroke, setting a new Olympic record in the process. His victory was part of a strong performance by the Australian swimming team.
1960 Summer Olympics[edit | edit source]
Theile successfully defended his title at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, again winning the gold medal in the 100-metre backstroke. This made him the first swimmer to win consecutive Olympic gold medals in the event.
Post-Swimming Career[edit | edit source]
After retiring from competitive swimming, Theile focused on his medical career. He became a respected surgeon and held various prestigious positions in the medical field. Theile also contributed to the development of sports medicine in Australia.
Honours and Recognition[edit | edit source]
David Theile has been honoured with several awards and recognitions for his contributions to swimming and medicine. He was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame and the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.
