She is currently a professor of Computer Science at Cornell Tech and holds the Robert V. Tishman Founder’s Chair. Estrin is also an Associate Dean at Cornell Tech and a co-founder of the non-profit startup, Open mHealth.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Deborah Estrin was born in Los Angeles, California. She earned her B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley in 1980. She then went on to receive her Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1985.
Career[edit | edit source]
Estrin began her academic career as an assistant professor in the Computer Science Department at the University of Southern California (USC). She later joined the faculty at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where she became a professor of Computer Science and directed the Center for Embedded Networked Sensing (CENS).
In 2012, Estrin joined Cornell Tech in New York City as a professor of Computer Science and the first faculty member to hold the Robert V. Tishman Founder’s Chair. She also serves as an Associate Dean at Cornell Tech.
Research and Contributions[edit | edit source]
Deborah Estrin is widely recognized for her contributions to the field of embedded networked sensing, which involves the use of small, low-power devices to collect and transmit data about the physical world. Her work has applications in environmental monitoring, healthcare, and urban planning.
Estrin is also a leading figure in the field of mobile health (mHealth), which leverages mobile technology to improve health outcomes. She co-founded Open mHealth, a non-profit organization that promotes open standards and interoperability in mHealth.
Awards and Honors[edit | edit source]
Deborah Estrin has received numerous awards and honors for her work, including:
- Election to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE)
