Dexbrompheniramine maleate
Dexbrompheniramine Maleate is an antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of allergy, hay fever, and the common cold. These symptoms include rash, watery eyes, itchy eyes/nose/throat/skin, cough, runny nose, and sneezing. It is also used to prevent and treat nausea, vomiting, and dizziness caused by motion sickness. Dexbrompheniramine helps control symptoms but does not treat the cause of the symptoms or speed recovery. It works by blocking a certain natural substance (histamine) that your body makes during an allergic reaction. This medication also blocks another natural substance in your body (acetylcholine).
Pharmacology[edit | edit source]
Dexbrompheniramine is a histamine H1 receptor antagonist. It competes with histamine for the normal post-synaptic H1 receptors on effector cells in the gastrointestinal tract, blood vessels, and respiratory tract. This prevents histamine from having an effect on these cells, thereby preventing the symptoms associated with allergies and colds.
