Dinwiddie County, Virginia is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 27,947. The county seat is Dinwiddie. Dinwiddie County is part of the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Dinwiddie County was established in 1752 from parts of Prince George County. It was named after Robert Dinwiddie, the Lieutenant Governor of Virginia from 1751 to 1758. The county has a rich history, including significant events during the American Civil War, such as the Battle of Dinwiddie Court House.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 507 square miles (1,310 km²), of which 504 square miles (1,310 km²) is land and 3.2 square miles (8.3 km²) (0.6%) is water. The county is bordered by Petersburg to the north, Prince George County to the east, and Brunswick County to the south.

Demographics

As of the 2020 census, there were 27,947 people, 10,000 households, and 7,000 families residing in the county. The population density was 55 people per square mile (21/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 60% White, 35% African American, 1% Native American, 1% Asian, and 3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2% of the population.

Government and Politics

Dinwiddie County is governed by a Board of Supervisors, consisting of five members elected from single-member districts. The county also has a County Administrator who oversees the day-to-day operations. The county is part of Virginia's 4th congressional district.
